Autophagy III is the final chapter of the Autophagy cycle composed togheter with percussionist Tom De Cock. It is a performative installation, created around the dialogue between De Cock’s micro-percussion setup and a multichannel immersive system of actuated percussions spread around the audience and designed to be performed in different configurations depending on the place of performance.

The micro-percussion setup includes a range of small amplified and processed percussion instruments such as crotales, tibetan bowls, frame drum, cymbals, and a number of square plates of different materials, such as wood, stone and metal.

The work continues the cycle’s exploration of self-regulating acoustic systems electroacoustic lutherie and unstable DIY instruments. It was premiered at Concertgebouw Brugge in 2024 and reflects both musicians’ ongoing research.

The audience is immersed in an ever-changing sound field generated by the interaction with sixteen suspended actuated percussions. Every percussion, like a creature in an artificial ecosystem, has a range of individual behaviours, it is capable of self regulation mechanisms and at the same time is able to listen to” the ensemble with simple analysis techniques. The installation is completed by an interactive light system developed together with Roberto Fusco.
